Shirley Gavronsky Nides, 76, of Duluth died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in St. Paul.

 

Shirley was raised in Centerville, Iowa, and obtained her B.A. from the University of Oklahoma at age 20. She was a respected teacher for 25 years in the Duluth schools. Shirley dedicated many years of service to her community by serving as co-president and longtime board member of Temple Israel Sisterhood and an officer of the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary. She also was on the Minnesota State Cancer Society Board of Directors and the Duluth Unit of the American Cancer Society.

 

Shirley also volunteered many hours to these fine organizations: Friends of the Library, United Way, American Association of University Women and the Duluth Jewish Federation.

 

Shirley was well known in the community because of her speaking and writing talents. Her presentation of ''The Presidential Ladies'' and other book reviews were the highlight of many area civic programs. Shirley had the honor of delivering the keynote address at her 50th high school reunion in Centerville, Iowa.

 

She is survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Arnold; daughters Anne Loeb of Des Moines, Iowa, Jane Nides of Minneapolis, Margaret Nides of Kansas City, Mo., and Melissa Nides of Chicago; sons James Nides of Washington, D.C., John Nides of St. Paul and Thomas Nides of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Oscar Gavronsky of Centerville, Iowa; a sister, Jean Cook of Ames, Iowa; and grandsons Matthew, Alexander and Jeffrey Loeb of Des Moines, Iowa, David, Dan, Dustin Nides of St. Paul, and Maxwell Nides of Washington, D.C.; a granddaughter, Taylor Nides of Washington, D.C.; daughters-in-law Linda Nides of St. Paul and Virginia Moseley of Washington, D.C.; and a son-in-law, Dr. Edward Loeb of Des Moines; all of whom will miss her dearly.

 

Funeral: 2 p.m. Sunday in Temple Israel, 1601 E. Second St. Burial in Temple Emmanuel Cemetery. Memorials to Temple Israel, Friends of Duluth Public Library, Alzheimer's Association, or St. Mary's Foundation of Duluth. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.

Deceased Name: ARNOLD RICHARD NIDES

Arnold Richard Nides, 93, of London Road long time Duluth businessman and civic leader died Nov. 3, 2004.

 

Arnold was born Jan. 3, 1911 in Hibbing, Minn., to Morris and Eva (Polinsky) Nides.

 

The family relocated to Duluth when Arnold was five. He was a 1929 graduate of Duluth Central High School and went on to graduate from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He was the owner of Automobile Sales Finance, and founded Nides Finance, a national consumer finance company with offices in Minn., N.D., Ariz., and Atlanta, Ga., for 35 years. Following 30 years as a financial advisor for American Express, he retired at age 90.

 

Arnold was active in the community as past president of Temple Israel, Duluth Jewish Federation and the Duluth chapter of the American Cancer Society. Arnold's other activities included serving as an executive board member of the YMCA, organizing the first allclass Central High School Reunion. Arnold was recognized for his outstanding contribution to Rotary with a Lifetime Membership Award. He was also active in Junior Achievement, United Way, Boy Scouts, Sigma Alpha Mu, and the Pennsylvania Club.

 

Arnold was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Shirley (Gavronsky) Nides in 1999.

 

Arnold is survived by his eight children, Jill Cole, Seattle, Wash., Anne (Dr. Edward) Loeb and their children, Matthew, Alexander and Jeffrey, Des Moines, Iowa, Jane Nides, Mpls, Minn., James Nides, Washington, D.C., Margaret (Joseph Carlson) Nides, Washington, D.C., Melissa Nides, Chicago, Ill., John (Linda) Nides and their children, David, Dan and Dustin, St. Paul, Minn., and Thomas (Virginia) Nides and their children, Maxwell and Taylor, Washington, D.C.

 

SERVICES: 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Temple Israel with burial following at Temple Emanuel Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Arnold and Shirley Nides Scholarship Fund CO Duluth Rotary Club #25, 505 W.
